Directed by: BENOÎT JACQUOT
Starring: Léa Seydoux, Diane Kruger, Virginie Ledoyen, Xavier Beauvois
This is an opportunity to re-experience director Benoît Jacquot’s excellence, with a lush visual feast that was a huge success screening internationally to award-winning praise.
It is Versailles on the eve of the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette (Diane Kruger, Fly Me to the Moon AF FFF13) delights in the company of her personal reader, Sidonie Laborde (Léa Seydoux, Beauty and the Beast, AF FFF15), who in turn revels in the unusually intimate if platonic attentions of her queen. As the storming of the Bastille becomes more imminent, tensions rise within the palace walls. Amongst the hectic commotion and amusingly confused and clueless noblemen, Sidonie comes to realise that the queen’s highest favour may not in fact lie with her, but with another. Unwilling to accept this state of affairs, the crafty Sidonie puts her intelligence to use, hatching a cunning ploy to win the affection she so desperately craves.
Magnificently shot and delivered by a superb cast, this film delves into an exquisite, dying world with such intimacy, it’s as if we are experiencing this significant piece of French history ourselves.
