The multi-talented actor/writer/director Maïwenn has followed up her gritty drama Polisse with Mon Roi. This is an impeccably nuanced dissection of a volatile marriage between two Parisians, played by Vincent Cassel and Emmanuelle Bercot, who won the award for Best Actress at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2015 for this performance.
The film follows a lawyer, Tony (Bercot), who is admitted to a rehab centre following a skiing accident, where she soon finds herself overly reliant on medication and carers. While recuperating, she reflects on her relationship with ex-husband Georgio (Cassel), prompted by the observation of a therapist that her accident may not have been as accidental as it seemed.
Tony recalls the trajectory of her relationship with Georgio, from its lust filled beginnings to the deteriorating dynamic that inevitably dooms the couple, and their son, to a maelstrom of hurt, anger and broken trust.
Allowing her actors to improvise within defined parameters, Maïwenn has elicited striking performances that render Mon Roi as a powerful and deeply affecting film.
