Taj Mahal presents an edge-of-the-seat journey into our most contemporary fears, based on the real life 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks on luxury hotels.
18-year-old Louise (Stacy Martin of Nymphomaniac notoriety), about to begin a new life in India, is left alone in her hotel room as her parents dine across town. Without warning, her bored complacency is shattered by the realisation that the loud noises outside are actually the sounds of terrorists attacking the hotel. As she desperately tries to survive alone, the safe haven of her room grows increasingly under threat.
Martin’s performance is a tour de force of control and depth, as is director Nicolas Saada’s ingenuity in maintaining suspense from the confines of just one set. Virtually shot in real-time, this is virtuoso film making, made all the more compelling by the disturbing context. Selected for the Venice International Film Festival in 2015 and featuring superb performances from Louis-Do de Lencquesaing (Superstar – Festival 2013) and Gina McKee (In The Loop) as Louise’s parents, this film will have audiences gripped from beginning to end.
