The winner of Un Certain Regard for Best Screenplay at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival is this hard-hitting and absorbing character study following two female soldiers dealing with the traumas of war.
After months of intensive battle in Afghanistan, a battalion of French soldiers land in Cyprus, where they are placed in the midst of luxury, and instructed to decompress before returning home. Amongst them are childhood friends Aurore (Ariane Labed) and Marine (Soko). The next three days involve a daze of alcohol, drugs and parties as, with their comrades, they ride high on the pounding beats and thrusting pulse of the European summer. However, this can only superficially mask the soldiers’ internal suffering. When the time comes for the collective therapy to begin, the strain of relieving their experiences reveals shocking truths, and it becomes clear that each soldier is a round of ammunition ready to explode.
Piercing performances from the entire ensemble cast illustrate the fragile psychology of the characters as a series of dramatic twists will keep audiences guessing with electric anticipation until the disturbing climax.
