THRILLER, DRAMA / FRANCE / 2018 / 101 MINS / M
One of the big audience favourites of Cannes 2018’s Director’s Fortnight, this second feature from award-winning music video director Romain Gavras reveals his fine filmmaking pedigree (son of Costa-Gavras), and gives the French people the film they’ve been yearning for: their own homage to Quentin Tarantino.
The World Is Yours is a multicultural, modern-day gangster flick that follows Fares (Karim Leklou, Heatwave, AF FFF2016), a small-time drug dealer who’s ready to give up a life of crime and become a popsicle distributor instead. However, when he discovers that his mother, Danny (the incomparable Isabelle Adjani, Skirt Day, AF FFF2010) has spent all of his savings, Fares is forced back in the game, as he attempts to pull off one last heist.
With a touch of Guy Ritchie humour and some bloodsoaking by way of Brian ‘Scarface’ De Palma thrown in for good measure, The World Is Yours comes driven by an ironically kitsch soundtrack of chansons and a noteworthy karaoke rendition of Toto’s Africa. If that wasn’t enough, it also features Vincent Cassel (Mon Roi, AF FFF2017, and Gauguin, AF FFF2018) whose on-screen dynamic with Adjani is simply hilarious.
This is the most fun you’ll have in the cinema all year.
"Using humour, style, its atmosphere and the plot line, the story of a little gangster caught in a situation beyond his control, this Gavras film reminds us of that of a Tarantino. "– 20 Minutes
"The World Is Yours is such an intoxicating delight because it still manages to make you care."– IndieWire
