The prolific and ever unpredictable French auteur François Ozon turns from last year’s provocative Double Lover (AF FFF2018) to grapple with an equally confronting topic – sexual assault in the Catholic Church.
Alexandre (Melville Poupaud, Laurence Anyways, AF FFF2013; In Bed With Victoria, AF FFF2017) lives in Lyon with his wife and children. One day, quite by chance, he discovers that the priest who abused him when he was a member of a boy scout troop is still working with children.
Determined to see justice served, Alexandre re-establishes contact with his boyhood friends – also victims of the same priest – François (Denis Ménochet, Custody, AF FFF2018, Inglorious Basterds) and Emmanuel (Swann Arlaud, winner of last year’s César Award for Best Actor in Bloody Milk, AF FFF2018). The men vow to ‘lift the burden of silence’. However, as the institutional weight and power of the Catholic Church bears down on this defiant group of survivors determined to tell their story, no one is left unscathed.
Reuniting Poupaud and Ozon, By the Grace of God is a harrowing tale of innocence lost, the abuse of trust and often futile search for revenge, yet one told in a manner that is pure Ozon.
