With an irresistibly star-studded cast, Eternity sweeps slowly across three generations accompanied by a score including Bach, Beethoven and Debussy. Through this collaboration with his wife – the actress Tran Nu Yen Khe, who is the omnipresent narrator of the film – Tran Anh Hung has established a beautiful ode to women and family life.
Valentine (Tautou), is twenty years old when, towards the end of the 19th century, she marries her beloved Jules. Ecstatic to be united, the two are further delighted to bear many children. However, bliss is not lasting, and tragedy befalls the couple, leaving the family scarred by the fragility of existence. In the years that follow, joy is reinstated with new romances, marriages and births. With the introduction of each new generation, one thing remains consistent: the unavoidable cycle of passion, love, turbulence and sorrow. This is the first French-language feature film from Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung, who is known for his Oscar-nominated film The Scent of Green Papaya.
Impressively shot by Lee Ping Bing, it is a feast for the eyes and ears – a meditative, powerfully stylised film imbued with a gentle sensitivity which captivates in every scene.
