Serge Gainsbourg collides with Spinal Tap in the second feature film directed by comedic acting powerhouse Alex Lutz – a heartfelt dramedy-mockumentary, Guy.
While sorting through his recently deceased mother’s belongings, a young journalist, Gauthier (Tom Dingler), discovers that he is the product of an affair between his mother and the eponymous Guy Jamet (played by the film’s writer and director, Lutz, who starred in Dr Knock, AF FFF2018). Once a French music mega-star, Jamet’s cheesy lyrics, yé-yé pop aesthetic and antiquated antics are now derided, even mocked in today's social media.
As Jamet embarks on a nostalgia tour, Gauthier joins the touring entourage under the pretext of filming a documentary about Jamet’s career, while keeping his real identity under wraps. Through this attempt to find out more about his father, he unexpectedly creates a moving sketch of the fading pop-star’s life.
Guy showcases Lutz’s extraordinary chameleonic talents, with the actor-director deftly wrangling the dual roles of both the young and old Jamet. Equally humorous and sentimental, this film is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, as exemplified through its selection as the closing film of Critics’ Week at Cannes 2018.
