A sprawling immersion into the pandemonium that rules life on the road with a travelling theatre troupe, this is a big-hearted second feature by French director/co-writer Léa Fehner, which won over critics and audiences alike at its international premiere in Rotterdam.
Based on Anton Chekhov’s weird and wonderful world of wild, nomadic freedom, "the Ogres” are a mixed bag of wicked characters played by an explosive ensemble cast including Adèle Haenel and Lola Dueñas. Led by the rough and dishonest but very appealing, François (played by Fehner's own father), they travel from town to town performing their extravaganza to audiences all over France. Yet the precise choreography of their act masks an intimate living situation of carefully-balanced turbulence, where the addition of fresh romances, old passions, and new children threaten to destroy a family that is comprised of much more than just blood-ties and wedding rings.
Speaking with a raw emotional honesty, Fehner draws heavily on her own experiences, bringing this cabaret delight to dazzling life and magnificently communicating an irreverent and raucous episodic adventure of those who defy convention.
